Workshops at Funkadelic
Pagode Samba Course
May 10, 17, 24 and June 7, 2019 from 7-9pm
Pagode Samba: Learn to Jam Brazilian Style! In collaboration with Samba New York!, Funkadelic Studios will be offering a brand new course on one of the most inspiring and inclusive forms of music making in the world—the samba! Learn to sing samba songs in Portuguese and to play some of the core percussion instruments characteristic of the “pagode” (pronounced “pah-GÓH-jee”)—a type of communal samba gathering that takes place year-round all over Brazil. The central feature of the “pagode” is the so-called “roda de samba”: a circle of musicians playing and singing informally around a table. In its original context, the circle is complemented by food and drink and a whole community of people singing, dancing, and socializing. Instead of a performance, a “pagode” is a party or social event.
To join this party and learn to play and sing samba first-hand, it's only $80 for all 4 classes if paid in full by May 3rd. Otherwise, the course fee is $100. Class date are: Friday May 10, May 17th, May 24th and June 7th from 7-9pm. All levels are welcome. No prior experience is required. Please bring your own “pagode" instrument if you have one. Some percussion instruments will be available to borrow. Guitar and cavaquinho players who can play chord charts are welcome to join the class, too.
The course will be taught by Philip Galinsky, Ph.D., Founder, Director, and principal percussionist of the renowned samba performance company, Samba New York! (https://www.sambanewyork.com/) Known as “Dr. Samba” for his rare combination of academic and practical expertise in Brazilian music, Philip is a leading educator and performer of samba percussion in the US, and one of the foremost ethnomusicologists specializing in Brazilian music. He is the first scholar to publish in-depth research in English on the Brazilian “pagode” movement, and he has been teaching “pagode” and other forms of samba and Brazilian music throughout the US for the last 25 years.
We look forward to having you join us for a fun and educational exploration of samba music!

Batalá New York, the premiere all-women percussion group, will demonstrate an array of Afro-Brazilian music styles and teach about its global influence. Attendees will have a chance to learn foundational rhythms, explore musical techniques and learn to play Samba Reggae. The workshop will culminate with students playing an original Batalá song alongside members of the ensemble. This workshop is best for beginner and intermediate students, and is especially suited for dancers who are curious about drumming. People of all ages, genders, and musical abilities are welcome to attend!!
Batalá New York is an all-female percussion ensemble that specializes in Afro-Brazilian music, primarily Samba Reggae — a genre originating in the state of Bahia in northeast Brazil. As its name suggests, Samba Reggae is world music that incorporates Brazilian Samba and Caribbean Reggae. Like Samba Afro and Axe, Samba Reggae incorporates African rhythms preserved and honored through Afro-Brazilian religions such as Candomblé. All three genres have influenced Batalá’s repertoire. During Carnaval every year, Samba Reggae is performed in the streets of Salvador, the capital of Bahia, by musical blocos with percussion sections with hundreds of drummers. In homage to that tradition, Batalá New York’s performances are percussive, energetic and highly dynamic with colorful costumes and lively choreography. Learn more at www.batalanewyork.love.

Whether you’re a songwriter, a musician or an aspiring artist, having the skills to express your own creative ideas in an mp3 is essential to you owning your creative work. It could be a demo of an original song including a melody and accompaniment, lyrics to a fresh beat, a fresh beat of your own or simply a musical idea you'd like to develop further. It could be just a slice of creativity you’d like to flesh out and share with a collaborator, or it could even be a full-fledged song. Whatever your creative idea is, by the end of this 5-hour workshop, you will be equipped with the skills to bring it to life.
