Drummer For A Day with Batalá New York

Drummer for a Day Jan 2019.JPG

Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 2:30-4:30pm at Funkadelic Studios

Batalá New York, the premiere all-women percussion group, will demonstrate an array of Afro-Brazilian music styles and teach about its global influence. Attendees will have a chance to learn foundational rhythms, explore musical techniques and learn to play Samba Reggae. The workshop will culminate with students playing an original Batalá song alongside members of the ensemble. This workshop is best for beginner and intermediate students, and is especially suited for dancers who are curious about drumming. People of all ages, genders, and musical abilities are welcome to attend!!

Batalá New York is an all-female percussion ensemble that specializes in Afro-Brazilian music, primarily Samba Reggae — a genre originating in the state of Bahia in northeast Brazil. As its name suggests, Samba Reggae is world music that incorporates Brazilian Samba and Caribbean Reggae. Like Samba Afro and Axe, Samba Reggae incorporates African rhythms preserved and honored through Afro-Brazilian religions such as Candomblé. All three genres have influenced Batalá’s repertoire. During Carnaval every year, Samba Reggae is performed in the streets of Salvador, the capital of Bahia, by musical blocos with percussion sections with hundreds of drummers. In homage to that tradition, Batalá New York’s performances are percussive, energetic and highly dynamic with colorful costumes and lively choreography. Learn more at www.batalanewyork.love.

To celebrate International Women's Month we are featuring the women of Funkadelic Studios.

Samantha Echo by Oceanlab Studios.jpg

Samantha Echo

Samantha Echo and her music have been described as "somewhere between dangerous and whimsy," (Jack Murray, Unknown Nobodies) meaning that she has fairy wings and a non-threatening babyface but she sings about horrible things; "Dark Fairy Rock" (Jamie Ignao), "Comic Con's Kate Bush" (Janna Pelle) meaning that she has a very high, girly soprano voice and is almost too nerdy to function; and a female incarnation of Morissey (Siv Disa), meaning that her lyrics will bum you out but in a good way.

Dale Novella

Reared in the South Carolina Lowcountry, Dale Novella is a singer/songwriter, poet and educator who performs and produces events in the New York City area. A captivating performer, Novella has graced various stages including The Bitter End, The Bowery Poetry Club, and is a regular at SoFar Sounds. Novella uses her love of music to educate youth in social justice and life skills. She teaches with the DreamYard Project and the Community-Word Project.

Dale Novella is heavily influenced by soul singers like Otis Redding, old school Motown, and 90s Rnb and Rock. She christened herself "The Mutron Angel" after hearing an ethereal R&B tune on Outkast's Idlewild soundtrack entitled "Mutron Angel" and performed by Whild Peach. This branding reminds Dale Novella the Mutron Angel to make music that is conscious, authentic, and funky.

Novella began The REC Life (Royaltie Entertainment Company) in 2011 to produce and promote music that inspires and uplifts.  The REC's flagship event is "The Poet WILL Be Televised" at Funkadelic Studios, a poetry jam session that fuses Dale's loves, good music and soul wrenching poetry. You can find more information about The Poet WILL Be Televised! by visiting The REC Life’s website, www.thereclife.org. Keep up with Dale Novella by following her on Instagram, Facebook and at her website www.dalenovella.com.

"In this culminating event at Rattlestick, Ms. Oh will detail her intimate history of intimates, finding the political in the very personal." –New York Times

“This Rattlestick blowout show embodies the reason we all live in New York City.” –VILLAGE VOICE’s Must-See List This Fall

What drives an artist to stand in her black corset in Times Square on a soapbox? It began at 17 with her first shoplifted f*ck me bra. Over the course of this unfiltered and soul-baring event, Diana Oh's personal collection of unmentionables comes on and off as she and her band ignite the audience to create a safer, more courageous world for us all.
