In collaboration with Samba New York, Funkadelic Studios will be offering a brand new course on one of the most inspiring and inclusive forms of music making in the world—the samba!
Learn to sing samba songs in Portuguese and to play some of the core percussion instruments characteristic of the “pagode” (pronounced “pah-GÓH-jee”)—a type of communal samba gathering that takes place year-round all over Brazil.
The central feature of the “pagode” is the so-called “roda de samba”: a circle of musicians playing and singing informally around a table. In its original context, the circle is complemented by food and drink and a whole community of people singing, dancing, and socializing. Instead of a performance, a “pagode” is a party or social event.
To join this party and learn to play and sing samba first-hand, it's only $80 for all 4 classes if paid in full by May 3rd. Otherwise, the course fee is $100. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pagode-samba-course-tickets-59355421664
All levels are welcome. No prior experience is required. Please bring your own “pagode" instrument if you have one. Some percussion instruments will be available to borrow on a first-come-first-served basis. Guitar and cavaquinho players who can play chord charts are welcome to join the class, too.
The course will be taught by Philip Galinsky, Ph.D., Founder, Director, and principal percussionist of the renowned samba performance company, Samba New York! (https://www.sambanewyork.com/)
Known as “Dr. Samba” for his rare combination of academic and practical expertise in Brazilian music, Philip is a leading educator and performer of samba percussion in the US, and one of the foremost ethnomusicologists specializing in Brazilian music. He is the first scholar to publish in-depth research in English on the Brazilian “pagode” movement, and he has been teaching “pagode” and other forms of samba and Brazilian music throughout the US for the last 25 years.
We look forward to having you join us for a fun and educational exploration of samba music!
